Digraphs: Ch- Words When You Only Have a Minute

October 24, 2015 By: Liz

Digraphs are formed when 2 letters come together to make 1 sound and they’re important to grasp confidently. For this month’s When You Only Have A Minute printable we’re focusing on ch- words. A free word wheel for practicing ch- digraph words. For US & UK spellers.

What you need

Download this free Ch-Words printable. You’ll also need scissors and a brad / split pin / paper fastener to attach them together. And pencils if your child wants to colour the black and white pictures.

Putting your ch- digraph word wheel together

  1. Print off the pages you need onto card stock. Choose between colour or black and white pictures. You can also choose between the options ‘chili’ or ‘chilli.’
  2. Colour the pictures if using black and white
  3. Cut carefully around all three circles
  4. Place them on top of one another, largest circle at the bottom, smallest on top
  5. Line up the centre circles and push a split pin or brad through to hold them together

How to use

Turn the three ‘wheels’ to match the words to the pictures, reading out loud as new words are formed. One child can choose a picture, then another child makes the correct word to match it! Easy peasy!

I’m glad it’s useful for you, Tracy. I’ll take a look to see if I can find enough WH words that are short enough to fit and that I have graphics for. Should be OK! Watch this space…

I’m glad they’re working for your kids, Lissa! I did spend quite a bit of time trying to workout how to format WH words, but they’re trickier because of their length, or because it’s hard to represent them graphically, for eg ‘who, where, when.’ I’m still intending to make them but I’m not sure when I’ll get them done. Thanks for putting them back on my radar!
