Ice Cream Sundaes Money Addition

June 16, 2016 By: Liz

Ice cream is pretty motivating to most kids (me, too) so using sundaes for money addition is not a bad strategy! Just don’t let your kids make them like this in real life or you’ll have ice cream dripping all over your kitchen table to the floor!

These free money addition ice cream sundaes are a great way to practice simple addition or counting on!

Preparing your sundae money addition cards

Print off the 3 pages onto card stock, laminate each page and cut the addition cards apart. Use dry erase markers to write the numbers into the equation and cross off the numbers below if using that as a support tool. If you want it to be self-checking write the answer on the back of the card before laminating.

Free ice cream sundae task cards go with this price list for money addition!

Ice cream sundae money addition

Take a good look at the pricing poster to become familiar with the price of the different elements.

Each sundae has 4 priced parts to the whole, so each cost can be written on one line, with the last line for the total.

Children can use the numbers at the bottom to cross off each number to help them find the total. Otherwise, children should be encouraged to ‘count on’ as they add the 4 numbers together. Using fingers as a counting aide is a great idea!

If children have not seen an equation running down the page instead of across, take some time explaining how it is the same and the importance of trying to line up the numbers so they are directly underneath each other.

A couple of the sundaes are improbable, but hopefully it will make your kids smile and keep them more engaged!

How much are these sundaes? This free activity is a fun way to practice money addition!
