Mother’s Day Cards for Kids to Make

April 26, 2015 By: Liz

Create the outside card then use the cutout hearts for messages

These Mother’s Day cards are great because you can make them as simple or as difficult as you like, depending on the fine motor skills of your little ones.

What you’ll need

  • The free downloadable Mother’s Day Card templates
  • Red, white and pink paper (for the top piece) and card for the base piece
  • Glue and scissors
  • Items for decorating (these are suggestions only): paints, pencils, markers, oil pastels, coloured paper strips, ribbon, glitter, pom poms, stickers, cellophane, corrugated card, felt, tissue paper…
  • Photos of mother and child if you’d like to use those

Making a card

Decide what colours you wish the cards to be. I’d suggest pink, red and/or white, but your kids might have other ideas. Print the heart (top) page in its preferred colour, and the base page in its preferred colour.

Printing instructions for making a Mother's Day card

Top page

  • cut the bottom off to make a square
  • fold on the Fold 1 line
  • fold on the Fold 2 line
  • fold on the Fold 3 line
  • cut out the heart shape. The paper will be a bit thick now so some children may need help to cut the heart shape.
  • KEEP THE HEARTS – they will be used for messages inside the card
  • open it out and it will be ready to glue on top of the bottom page. Make sure to glue the printed side down so the lines are not visible on the card.

Bottom page

  • decide how you want the hearts to be decorated
  • collect all the materials you’ll need
  • decorate each square
  • wait for the page to dry
  • carefully glue the top page on top of the decorated areas

Decorating ideas

Photos of mother and child would be sweet inside the hearts.

Finishing it off

  • the top page should now be glued onto the bottom page
  • fold it in half to make a card
  • write Happy Mother’s Day or I love my mum (or grandma) or From…  on the bottom coloured strip that shows beneath the 2 hearts (on the outside of the card). Since there is a strip front and back they can write 2 messages.
  • inside the card glue a strip of paper or card to the bottom section to hold the hearts
  • using the hearts cut from the top page, decorate them or write messages, draw pictures, add finger prints. Slip them into the pouch created by the paper strip
  • decorate the top half of the card with Happy Mother’s Day or hand prints

A note

If a lot of paint or glue is being used it may be best to decorate the inside of the card BEFORE decorating the squares.

Have you downloaded the template yet? If not, here’s the free download of the Mother’s Day Card.
