Write and Wipe Addition with Counting Bears

September 21, 2017 By: Liz

This write and wipe addition and counting mat can be used over and over to practice addition within 10. And while the counting bear pictures are provided if you have real teddy bear counters that would be an added tactile bonus.

At the bottom of this post you’ll find links to 13 more fun counting bear activities.

You'll get tons of use out of this free write and wipe addition and counting mat!

Gaining confidence and fluency with numbers within ten is a necessary foundation for solid mathematical understanding in the future. This write and wipe addition mat has been created in a way that supports children who are new to addition as well as those that are gaining confidence with mental math.

Prep for this write and wipe addition activity

Download the activity at the bottom of this post. Print off the addition mat plus color or black and white bears. Laminate the mat or pop it inside a plastic sleeve. Cut the other pages to separate the bears and the bear counting cards. Grab a dry erase marker or crayon.

If you have your own plastic counting bears use those instead of the individual bears on the number line.

Practice addition within ten with this free write and wipe addition and counting mat!

Working with counting bear addition

Place the mat in front of your child with the counting cards on one side and the individual bears (or plastic ones) on the other side.

Children can then add 2 cards to the top 2 squares. Count the bears in each and write the number in the squares below. Add together to find the answer using the number line at the bottom if needed.

Erase the numbers and start again with 2 different cards.

Differentiation

Many children will not need to use the number line at the bottom and can be encouraged to do mental math, use their fingers or point to each bear on the cards and count up how many there are. It’s especially beneficial to start with the first number in their mind and then count on to find the total.

Other children may struggle with their short term memory or need more confidence boosting, so they can use the number line as a support.

Count how many bears in the first square then go down to the bottom number line, add that number of bears and see what the numeral looks like so they can copy it. Clear off the bears and repeat the process with the second number.

Clear off all the bears again, add the first number of bears to the number line and then add the second number of bears.

Count the bears on the number line pointing a finger to each numeral under each bear as they go. This gives the added benefit of seeing the written numbers over and over as they count. Then write the answer for the equation.

The cards and individual bears can also be used to practice 1 to 1 correspondence. Or flip over all the cards and play a memory game by matching the cards.

These free counting bears can be used to practice 1 to 1 correspondence as well as addition within 10!
