Bugs: How many syllables?

Learning to hear the syllables in words is an important early reading and writing skill. These cutey bugs will give your kids practice at hearing 1, 2 and 3 syllables.

Practice counting syllables with this free bug activity!

Putting it together

  1. Scroll down this page to find the download link.
  2. Print off the colour or black and white versions.
  3. Cut along the grey line to separate the bug bottle.
  4. Cut along the black lines to separate the cards.
  5. Fold on the dotted lines and glue the back sides together to form 2-sided cards.
  6. Cut around the 3 bugs in their circles.

Practice counting syllables with this free bug activity!

Counting syllables

  • Put the bug bottle and 3 bug counters in front of your child.
  • Show them the pictures of the bugs, ask them the name of the bug and then decide how many syllables are in that word.
  • Place that number of bug tokens in the jar.
  • Turn the card over and count how many segments in the word to double check.
