10 Free CVC Word Puzzles

October 14, 2016 By: Liz

Reading 3-letter CVC words is a big step in learning to read. These CVC word puzzles are a fun way to practice blending sounds into words as the puzzles are put together!

Practice blending sounds into words with these free CVC word puzzles!

Short vowels

There are 10 puzzles for you to download, 2 for each short vowel.

The word families include: -at, -et, -ig, -og and -ug.

The words included are: cat, bat, vet, wet, big, dig, jog, log, tug and bug.

Just print and cut to get going with these free CVC word puzzles!

Using these CVC word puzzles

Download the CVC word puzzles (the link is below the next pic), then print them onto card and cut each puzzle into 3 strips.

Real words

The pictures make these puzzles fairly easy to put together so much of a child’s focus can be directed towards blending the sounds to read the word. Encourage children to sound out each letter as they put the puzzles together and to sound out the word, with a finger pointing at each letter, when complete.

Nonsense words

They can also make nonsense words by mixing up the puzzles with a vowel in the middle and any consonant on either side and reading the pretend word. Or is it pretend? They need to then decide whether they’ve created another real word even though they’ve mixed up the letters.

For example, in the pictures above mixing up the letters could create: bet, get, beg or bit – all real words. But they could also be mixed to create: teb, git, biv or teg.
