Alphabet Flash Cards

October 17, 2015 By: Liz

Learning the alphabet and gaining confidence with beginning sounds is such an amazing turning point for children. It’s like grasping the key to a great mystery. Children see text all around them so learning to decipher that text can be very exciting! Alphabet flash cards can be a helpful tool as children go through the process of learning and mastering the alphabet, although they need to be used in ways that make learning fun and not a chore.

Use these free alphabet flash cards to create fun learning games for your kids!

Preparation

Simply download these Alphabet Flash Cards here, print them off on cardstock, cut and laminate, and you’re ready to go!

How can these alphabet flash cards be used?

Here are some ideas!

  1. Print and cut the pages, stack them in alphabetical order then staple on the side to create an alphabet book.
  2. Print off 2 sets and use them to play memory matching games
  3. Hide the cards then ask children to search for specific letters
  4. Sort cards by whether they’re tall, short or have a hanging tail
  5. Rhyming game: for example, ‘I spy a picture that rhymes with fall’
  6. Spread some of the cards on the floor or across the table. Call out a letter name then the child jumps on it or slaps their hand onto it
  7. Think of other words starting with the same sound
  8. Count the syllables in the words
  9. Mix up cards, then work together to put them in alphabetical order
  10. Use them as writing prompts
  11. Spelling self-check
  12. Have a discussion about ‘c’ and ‘g’ having 2 sounds, for eg castle and cent, grapes and genie.

Looking for more flash cards?

I have created a larger alphabet flash card set with 4 cards for each letter, including long vowels and soft c and g. A black and white version of all cards is included. You can find it at my Teachers Pay Teacher store here.

Use this large set of alphabet flash cards to create fun alphabet learning games for your kids!

What are your favourite alphabet games? Let us know in the comments.

Wishing you happy teaching and learning!
