Fall words
Here are the words included in this set. They’re not all specifically related to fall, of course, but the graphics give us that autumn feeling!
3 letter words
- boy, sit, owl, fox
- pie, log, hay, fog
4 letter words
- bear, crow, girl, jump
- cake, leaf, hold, rake
5 letter words
- acorn, carve, trees, candy
- apple, drink, sleep, sweep
To prepare
Print off the cards you wish to use in either colour or black and white. I like to print onto card but paper’s fine, especially if laminated!
Cut the words into strips and they’re ready to use. If you’re using black and white your child might like to colour it before it’s cut. In fact, I find kids really value their puzzles if they’ve coloured them and then they’re laminated for them to keep.
Using these fall word puzzles
Choose an appropriate puzzle and give your child the pieces. Encourage them to put the pieces together to form a word.
If your child is simply using the picture to complete the task before announcing that they’re finished, make sure they go back, put their finger under each letter and sound out the word. Even if they only want to work on sounding out the first or last letter, that will give them solid word practice.
For more advanced children give them a few puzzles at a time so they have to sort the strips into individual puzzles first. It’s good practice for doing multiple step activities.
