Word and Picture Puzzles: Letters U-Z

January 13, 2017 By: Liz

Day 5 of our alphabet giveaway has arrived with these word and picture alphabet puzzles for letters U-Z. Kids recreate the picture to find the word then paste and write.

Our 500 page MEGA ALPHABET BUNDLE is $16 today (Wed US time), though it’s valued at $41.00 – and will be going up to $30 very soon.

Grab these free word and picture puzzles and practice putting three-letter words together!

Alphabet Giveaways

  • Monday (A-E): Beginning Sounds Picture Sorts
  • Tuesday (F-J): Alphabet Mazes – both uppercase and lowercase
  • Wednesday (K-O): Uppercase and Lowercase Alphabet Sorts
  • Thursday (P-T): Alphabet Picture and Word Match
  • Friday (U-Z): Alphabet Word and Picture Puzzles: Solve and Write

These free puzzles are a fun way to practice working with sounds to create words!

Preparing these word and picture puzzles

Just print, grab some scissors and pencils and go!

How to use

  • Print off pages as needed. Each letter activity needs a recording page & a puzzle page.
  • Write their name at the top.
  • Look at the target letter on the right, saying the letter name and the letter sound.
  • Trace over the letter with their finger (or a marker), following the correct stroke order and direction.
  • Look down the list of words underneath that letter: check that they all begin with the target letter. Do they recognize any of the other letters? Can they take a guess as to what the words might be? What words can they think of that start with that sound?
  • Cut out the first puzzle, cutting it into three strips. I recommend that kids do NOT cut all the puzzles out at the same time as it will make the activity much more difficult!

Tips for kids

Rearrange the three pieces to form a word.

Hint 1: these words always start with the target letter. Then use the picture or the letters to work out the rest of the word.

Hint 2: If the target letter is a consonant the 2nd letter will usually be a vowel (but not always).

Hint 3: If the target letter is a vowel the 2nd letter will usually be a consonant (but not always).

Hint 4: All the words are listed on the right. Can they find the matching word?

These free word and picture puzzles are great for fine motor skills as well as literacy!

Finish off

  • Say the word then copy it on the line under the picture.
  • Find the word on the list on the right and trace it or color it in.
  • Continue with the rest of the puzzles.
  • EXTENSION: Check the list on the right. Is it in alphabetical order?
