Word Family Rhyming Clip Cards

July 8, 2016 By: Liz

Since word families end with the same sound they’re basically rhyming words. These rhyming clip cards encourage children to think about sounds that are quite similar to decide if and how they’re different. When they decide which word does not rhyme with the others, it’s clipped!

Which picture doesn't belong? These free rhyming clip cards give kids a chance to practice word families and rhyming!

Being able to hear the sounds in words and differentiate between similar-sounding words and syllables is called phonological awareness, and it’s an important skill for budding readers and writers.

When learning to read and write kids often find that there are many close sounds that can trip them up, which of course, completely changes the meaning. That’s why we start preparing for reading from birth, reading stories, teaching nursery rhymes and so forth.

Throughout this long process children are gradually able to refine how they listen. At first they can distinguish between 2 very different words, then they can hear the starting and ending sounds of a single word, and so it goes until they can hear, and distinguish between, every sound in a syllable or word.

Find which word doesn't belong with these free word family rhyming clip cards!

Preparing your rhyming clip cards

  • Download these Rhyming Clip Cards below.
  • Print these pages onto card, cut them to separate and laminate if you wish.
  • Grab some clothespins or paper clips and you’re ready to go!

How to use these cards

Children look at the letters in the centre and pronounce the word family. They then look at the pictures, say what they’re called and decide whether they rhyme and belong to the same word family.

They then clip the clothespin to the picture that does not match, saying that word and explaining how it is different to the others.

As an extension ask kids to write down the picture words as they say them so they can look at the written differences that can be seen amongst the non-rhyming, non-word-family pictures.

Which word doesn't rhyme? Choose and clip. Free word family rhyming cards!
